Olde Towne Portsmouth: A seven-block walk that spans three centuries.
With its prime riverfront location and quaint historic charm, Portsmouth is the perfect destination for your next leisure, vacation or business trip.
One of the most appealing aspects of the city is its pedestrian-friendly Olde Towne Historic District. Stroll from our waterfront conference center to chef-owned restaurants, trendy shops, art galleries, and the largest collection of architecturally noteworthy homes between Alexandria, VA, and Charleston, SC.
It’s also an easy stroll to the city’s numerous museums, as well as the Hill House – the only historic home open to the public for guided tours. Just a five-minute ferry ride from Norfolk, Portsmouth is also close to a number of the most popular destinations in Virginia, such as Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg and the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
While here, carve out some time to take two of Portsmouth’s most popular tours: The Olde Towne Lantern Tour, a walking tour of the historic district with a costumed guide at twilight, coupled with a harbor cruise on board the Carrie B, an exact replica of a 19th-century Mississippi riverboat. Along with narrated commentary, the Carrie B provides visitors with panoramic views of the nation's oldest shipyard and its first U.S. Naval hospital, both in Portsmouth, and the world's largest naval base in Norfolk.
History lovers will delight in a visit to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, which pays tribute to America’s first naval shipyard. Many historic ships were built there, including the first ironclad to engage in battle; the nation’s first battleship; and the world’s first aircraft carrier. The shipyard is also home to the country’s first drydock, still in use today.
Portsmouth is less than a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. If driving isn’t feasible, the Norfolk International Airport, just 20 minutes away, provides 200 flights daily. And the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport can be reached in less than an hour. More information available at www.portsva.com or call (800) PORTS-VA.
